A year has passed since Saint Maria de Mattias was established as the patron saint of Bolesławiec. On 18 May last year, a solemn Mass was held in the Market Square, during which the decree of the Holy See granting our city the patronage of the founder of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ Congregation was announced.

The anniversary celebrations lasted three days. They concluded with a Mass presided over by Rev. Prelate Józef Gołębiowski, held on Monday, 18 May this year, at the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

After the service, residents of Bolesławiec had the opportunity to hear “The Great Mass John Paul II” by Gerald Spitzner. The work by the Austrian composer was written in 2004. Its premiere had been planned for John Paul II’s 85th birthday, but the Mass was first performed in May 2005 in Poznań.

In Bolesławiec, Spitzner’s work was performed by Grażyna Zielińska (soprano), Krzysztof Starosta (violin) and Karol Drynkowski (organ).
