At the ceremony, held on Friday, 8 May, at the monument to the soldiers of the Second Army of the Polish Army, participants included, among others, Chairwoman of the City Council Janina Piestrak-Babijczuk, Bolesławiec Deputy Mayor Maciej Małkowski, county head Cezary Przybylski, deputy county head Stanisław Chwojnicki, Chair of the County Council Karol Stasik, Bolesławiec commune head Kazimierz Gawron, Bolesławiec commune secretary Andrzej Dutkowski, head of the Bolesławiec police Grzegorz Chirowski and deputy commander of the Bolesławiec county PSP Robert Brzeziński.
The ceremony was opened by Capt. Remigiusz Kwieciński of the 23rd Silesian Artillery Brigade. “Today we stand at this ceremonial assembly to bear witness to remembrance and pay tribute to known and anonymous heroes,” the soldier said. “Let us show deep respect to the veterans and participants of those events present here, and in silence and reflection bow our heads to those who have passed away.
County head Cezary Przybylski also spoke: “I strongly believe that every life lost during World War II will serve as an eternal warning to all those who, driven by a desire for power and nationalism, might cause the nightmare of war to break out again.
The prayer for the victims of World War II was led by Rev. Sławomir Szelągowski. After the roll call of the fallen, the honour guard company of the 23rd Artillery Brigade fired a volley in honour of the Polish soldiers.
One of the most important elements of Friday’s ceremony was the laying of flowers at the monument to the soldiers of the Second Army of the Polish Army. Flowers were laid, among others, by delegations of veterans, Siberian deportees, uniformed services and local government officials.
After the official proceedings, Cezary Przybylski invited everyone to soldiers’ pea soup.
