The incident occurred on 19 March in Strzelno (Pieńsk municipality, Zgorzelec County), near national road No. 94. One of the farmers unearthed unexploded ordnance with a plough. He immediately notified the police.
Bomb Disposal Patrol No. 23 from the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment in Bolesławiec was called to the scene, which was secured by district police officers from Zgorzelec.
The dangerous find turned out to be a 152 mm artillery shell dating from World War II.
Zgorzelec police:
For safety reasons, the commander of the bomb disposal patrol decided to detonate the shell after transporting it to a safe location. People in the nearby bar and car park were evacuated, and traffic on road K-94 was halted. The shell was detonated in a secluded location.
Bomb disposal experts remind us:
Careless handling of unexploded ordnance and misfires leads to accidents in which a dozen or so people are killed and several dozen injured in Poland every year.
They add:
We remind you that if you find unexploded ordnance, do not touch it, secure the area and immediately REPORT it to the police or call the emergency number.
