The nationwide campaign is intended to enforce the obligation for vehicle drivers and passengers to wear seat belts and for children to use safety seats or other restraint devices.
Polish Police Headquarters:
The “Seat Belts” campaign also aims to draw road users’ attention to the consequences of driving without wearing seat belts in the event of being involved in a road incident.
Police officers add:
Let us remember that not using seat belts while driving significantly increases the risk of serious injuries not only during an accident, but also in a collision or even during sudden braking.
When a vehicle collides with an obstacle, the people inside are subjected to an enormous inertial force, causing a person for a moment to have a “collision mass” of even several tonnes.
It is important that passengers sitting in the rear also wear seat belts. If a passenger in the back seat does not fasten their seat belt, they will hit the back of the seat occupied by the person sitting in front of them in a head-on collision. The force of the impact can sometimes break the seat, and the injuries resulting from this situation may even lead to the death of the person sitting in front.
How should seat belts be fastened?
- they must lie flat against the body
- the belt should be tight
- the lower part of the belt should fit around the hips as low as possible in relation to the abdomen (label no. 1 in the illustration)
- the upper part of the belt should run over the middle of the shoulder (label no. 2 in the illustration).
