The duty officer at the Zgorzelec police station received information about a residential building on fire in Radzimów (Zgorzelec County). According to the report, people might be inside.

A patrol was dispatched to the scene. The police officers immediately entered the building, where—despite heavy smoke in one of the rooms—they noticed a woman lying on a bed.

The 91-year-old woman was unable to move on her own, so the officers carried her outside. The emergency medical team that arrived at the scene took the woman to hospital.

Firefighters working at the scene used specialist equipment to enter the upper floor of the building, where the source of the fire was located. In one of the rooms, they found a man’s body. It turned out to be the woman’s 60-year-old son.

Police officers, including a forensic technician, worked at the scene under the supervision of the district prosecutor, along with a fire investigation expert and fire service personnel.

Preliminary findings indicate that the fire was caused by an ember from a cigarette butt.
