The incident occurred on Friday, February 8, after 3:00 p.m. A woman called an elderly couple living in Czerna (Nowogrodziec gmina). This is how she tried to deceive her intended victims (quoted after The Bad Bunzlauer):

[…] she ran someone over at a pedestrian crossing in Nowogrodziec, is at the local police station, and is waiting there with the prosecutor and a police officer. And she will immediately send a police officer to Grandma for money because she is in trouble...

Fortunately, the seniors kept their heads and began asking the fake granddaughter detailed questions. When she realized she would not get anywhere, she hung up.

The residents of Czerna notified the police. Actions are underway to establish the woman’s identity and arrest her. She may face up to 8 years in prison.

What does the police advise?

The police warn against such phone calls. Do not:

  • provide any information over the phone about your home, savings, when you are at home, or whom you live with
  • answer any surveys containing similar questions
  • give cash or any other items to strangers
  • let surveyors, salespeople, people claiming to be employees of various institutions, or other suspicious individuals into your home.

Each time, it is worth calling the relative back at a known number and contacting someone in the family to confirm the incident.

Any suspicious phone calls should be reported to the police immediately by calling 997 or 112.
