Two years ago, Rev. Dr. Andrzej Jarosiewicz, rector of the Bolesławiec Marian Basilica, mentioned that the church crypts might be opened to visitors.
When renovation and conservation work began, the expectation was that chapels would be found in that very place. (Such references appeared in old Bolesławiec chronicles.)
Instead, 7–8-metre burial chambers were found—a small necropolis where around 100 people may be buried. (And not only clergy, but also residents of Bolesławiec.)
It is scandalous that, just after the war, the Soviets ransacked this place in search of valuables. They found nothing.
As Rev. Dr A. Jarosiewicz says, this place is a closed chapter in the history of Bolesławiec families. Surely none of them would want anyone to interfere with the repose of their dead. Therefore, despite earlier announcements, the crypts of the Bolesławiec Marian Basilica will remain closed.
