The incident occurred on January 22 at approximately 3:40 a.m. near the village of Wilczy Las (Warta Bolesławiecka municipality).
Two vehicles collided head-on: a Volkswagen Polo passenger car and a Fiat Ducato car transporter with a trailer.
As reported on the website of Komendy Powiatowej Państwowej Straży Pożarnej w Bolesławcu:
The vehicles were in ditches on both sides of the road. An injured person was inside the heavily damaged passenger car. Rescue workers immediately began creating access with hydraulic tools and evacuating the person from the vehicle.
During the evacuation, a medical rescue team arrived at the scene and took over the injured person. Unfortunately, a doctor pronounced the person dead.
A 52-year-old man from Bolesławiec died at the scene.
The operation lasted nearly four hours and involved firefighters from Bolesławiec, volunteers from OSP Warta Bolesławiecka, as well as the police, a prosecutor and a medical rescue team.
Investigators are determining the causes of the tragedy.
