On Tuesday, October 23, at noon, a conference of the County Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Bolesławiec entitled “Fire Hazards in Residential Buildings” began in the conference room of the Bolesławiec Cultural Center – International Ceramics Center.

To achieve the main objective of the State Fire Service’s educational and information campaign “A Detector on Guard for Your Safety”—reducing the number of victims of fires and carbon monoxide poisoning in apartments and single-family homes—participants were presented with five topics related to fire hazards in buildings.

The conference was opened by the county commander of the State Fire Service in Bolesławiec, Junior Brigadier Andrzej Śliwowski, who, in addition to presenting the conference’s objectives, discussed two topics:

  • the tasks of the State Fire Service concerning the supervision of fire safety regulations in multi-family buildings
  • compliance with fire safety regulations in residential buildings.

Next, the deputy commander of the Rescue and Firefighting Unit, Junior Brigadier Janusz Gabryś, gave a presentation on “fire and other hazards in buildings.” The lecture was enriched with relevant examples from rescue operations conducted in our county and photographic documentation. This made the presentation more accessible to young people, as some of the audience were students of the Construction Schools Complex.

Marek Burniak, deputy building supervision inspector in Bolesławiec, focused in his presentation on issues related to the safe use of buildings and the building logbook. This part of the conference greatly interested the representatives of building managers present.

The final topic, “Chimneys—proper operation of chimney flues and heating appliances,” was presented using films provided by the Corporation of Polish Chimney Sweeps.

To ensure that the event did not remain merely theoretical, carbon monoxide detectors were raffled among the participants; these can certainly help save lives.

Why is this so important?

Firefighters:

The beginning of the heating season generates an increased number of interventions in residential buildings. In 2017, we recorded 132 fires in residential buildings in Bolesławiec County, compared with 85 in 2018.

In 2017, the fire service responded to 28 incidents involving carbon monoxide, and in 2018, before the heating season had begun, it had already responded 17 times.
