Last year, Bolesławiec police officers repeatedly conducted searches for mushroom pickers who had lost their sense of direction. In many cases, missing people who entered the forest did not follow basic safety rules.
How to Pick Mushrooms Safely in the Forest?
- when going into the forest, be sure to take a phone with you; it may prove useful in an emergency
- if you are going in a group, do not leave it
- if you take children or elderly people with you, keep them in sight
- if you do not know the area, do not go deep into the forest; stay near the place where you entered it; remember distinctive features, such as the numbers on boundary posts
- tell someone where you are going in the forest.
If a missing person finds their way back on their own, they should immediately notify the police that they no longer need assistance.
What else is worth remembering?
- when going into the forest, secure your vehicle properly: lock the doors and windows; leave the car in a visible place so that it does not become an easy target for thieves
- do not leave valuables in the vehicle (navigation equipment, a laptop, mobile phone, handbag, wallet, documents).
