A wet road in summer can easily be compared to an icy road in winter. Unfortunately, many road users have found this out in recent days.
What are the basic safety rules?
Both apply to everyone travelling in vehicles, but the rule concerning a safe distance should be observed above all by drivers of heavy goods vehicles. On a wet road, the braking distance of heavy vehicles increases significantly.
If we are travelling during intense rainfall or immediately after a heavy downpour, let us remember the very dangerous phenomenon of aquaplaning, which causes a tyre to lose traction while driving on a water-covered surface. This is caused by a layer of water forming between the tyre and the road. As a result, drivers very often lose control of their vehicles.
How should you drive to arrive safely?
The police advise: driver, slow down and keep a safe distance—do not drive “on the bumper”.
Let us recall that on Wednesday, 18 July, before 9:00 a.m., in the vicinity of Trzebień (Bolesławiec gmina), a passenger car collided head-on with a lorry.
The road was slippery and the driver of the Audi passenger car, a 29-year-old Ukrainian citizen, was carried onto the bend. The vehicle crossed into the opposite lane—straight into the path of the lorry. The force of the impact tore the passenger car into two parts. The Ukrainian man died at the scene.
