The incident occurred in Zgorzelec on July 8, 2018. 42-year-old Mariusz D. attacked his neighbor, punching him in the face and also striking him with a Japanese katana sword. The injured man suffered numerous injuries, including a displaced broken nose, as well as a serious injury in the form of severed thumbs on both hands, which may cause severe disability and permanent incapacity to work as a surgeon.
The perpetrator was detained and brought to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zgorzelec, where he was charged with causing serious bodily harm to the injured party. The suspect, Mariusz D., confessed to committing the alleged offense.
The District Prosecutor’s Office in Zgorzelec subsequently filed a motion for the suspect’s temporary detention for a period of three months from the date of his arrest. On July 10, 2018, the District Court in Zgorzelec granted the motion and applied a custodial preventive measure against Mariusz D.
The offense alleged against the suspect, under Article 156 § 1, point 2 of the Penal Code, is punishable by imprisonment of no less than 3 years and up to 15 years.
The injured man is in hospital.
