The Bolesławiec District Prosecutor’s Office is conducting an investigation into an accident that occurred on July 4 in Tomaszów Bolesławiecki (Warta Bolesławiecka municipality). Investigators determined that 25-year-old Ukrainian citizen Oleh S., while driving a Mercedes on a minor road, failed to properly observe the road ahead and the road markings.

The result? He failed to yield the right of way to cyclist Bogdan C. and entered the intersection at excessive speed, hitting the victim. The cyclist died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

The suspect was detained and brought to the Bolesławiec District Prosecutor’s Office, where he was charged with intentionally violating road safety rules and causing a fatal accident.

The prosecutor’s office requested S.’s temporary detention, pointing out, among other things, that the suspect has no permanent place of residence in Poland, which gives rise to a justified fear that he might flee and go into hiding. The investigators also argued that the severe penalty facing the perpetrator could prompt him to take actions hindering the proceedings.

The court granted the prosecutor’s request. The Ukrainian national, who was remanded in custody for three months, faces up to 8 years in prison. We will certainly return to this topic.
