Do you have a debt problem? Find out how to organise your finances and get out of debt in a few steps.

First of all, acknowledge your problem

The fundamental issue that leads to escaping the debt spiral is admitting to yourself that you have debts. As with addictions, indebted people often refuse to accept that the source of their problems lies within themselves and that the cause is poor management of the household budget. As a result, they pay little attention to minor debts and obligations, which suddenly turn into serious debt before they know it. If we are brave enough to admit that we have a problem, it will be much easier for us to consider how to get out of debt.

Organise your obligations

The next step towards getting out of debt is to take an honest look at your finances. Organise your debts by writing down on a piece of paper whom you owe, how much you owe and what you owe it for. Put the most important obligations at the top of the list: loans, arrears on utility bills and other debts that could ultimately leave you without a home, car, electricity or gas. These types of debts should be repaid first.

Plan cuts to your budget

No one said that getting out of debt would be pleasant and trouble-free. In reality, it often involves a radical change in lifestyle. Giving up pleasures and, broadly speaking, tightening your belt will be necessary to free up money to repay your debt. It is also worth trying to increase your income, either by changing jobs or finding additional work. Under no circumstances should you borrow money to repay your debts, as this will only make your situation worse.

Contact your creditor and show your willingness to repay

As a debtor, it is very important to show goodwill and express your willingness to repay your obligations. Contact your creditors—many banks, sellers and debt-collection companies approach indebted people with a great deal of empathy when they see a declared willingness to repay the obligation. Staying in contact with your creditor helps you obtain better debt-repayment terms: perhaps the debt-collection company will spread your debt into convenient instalments, or may even write off part of the debt.
