On March 26, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the duty officer at the Municipal Police Headquarters in Legnica was informed by residents of one of the buildings about gas escaping in the stairwell. A police patrol and firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene.
At the scene, the officers immediately detected the smell of gas. Without hesitation, they began checking all the residential premises from which the gas could have been escaping. It was clearly much stronger under the door of one of the apartments.
When the officers entered, they found three completely drunk people inside. They also noticed a gas cylinder connected to a cooker with a rusty hose. The illegal and improper connection of the cylinder caused it to leak, allowing gas to escape. An explosion and tragedy could have occurred at any moment. Moreover, the 56-year-old woman was casually smoking cigarettes, as if nothing had happened.
The firefighters immediately disconnected the gas installation throughout the building, while the police detained all three irresponsible people: the aforementioned 56-year-old woman and two men aged 26 and 48.
All those detained were drunk—the record holder, one of the men, had nearly 3 per mille of alcohol in his system—and they were taken to police custody.
The detainees could now face up to three years in prison.
