The fourth meeting of the “Comedy Without Borders” project offers an opportunity to experience the work of two legendary directors: Milosz Forman and Stanisław Bareja. The comedy “Teddy Bear” is one of the finest Polish examples of the genre, while the Czech classic “The Firemen’s Ball” was Forman’s first important film (Oscar nomination). The invited guest will be the great Polish cabaret star Joanna Kołaczkowska (Hrabi cabaret). We invite you from 16:30 to the CIK “Orzeł” at Chopina Street.
We have 10 double invitations for our readers. All you need to do is write to us using the contact form or on Facebook: I want an invitation. They will be given to the first ten people.
Joanna Kołaczkowka is an icon of the Polish cabaret scene. She appeared in the film “Ryś”, a continuation of the cult classic “Teddy Bear”. An actress and writer, she has been permanently associated with the Potem and Hrabi cabarets. She appears in the popular improvised series “The Heirs”. The discussion panel will take place immediately after the film “Teddy Bear” (around 20:00).
About the films
“Teddy Bear” (1980), dir. S. Bareja – this film needs no introduction to Polish audiences… it is one of only a few comedies that can, without any exaggeration, be called a cult classic! The paradox-filled and comic screenplay by the Bareja–Tym duo portrays the life of the president of the “Rainbow” sports club during the era of the Polish People’s Republic. The film remains compelling despite the passage of 40 years, and every acting performance is a true gem, as even the minor roles feature excellent Polish actors (including W. Pokora, S. Mikulski, Z. Czerwińska and B. Pawlik).
“The Firemen’s Ball” (1967), dir. M. Forman – the film takes us to a small Czech town where the annual Firemen’s Ball is held. Despite careful preparations, not everything goes according to plan. Beneath the guise of a light, enjoyable comedy, Milosz Forman revealed the mechanisms of the communist system. This is where the greatness of the film lies; like “Teddy Bear”, it gains additional colors and flavors over the years. It is worth recalling that “The Firemen’s Ball” was the Czech candidate for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
