Seniors who have so far occupied the upper floor of the building at 6 C Staroszkolna Street will have newly renovated rooms on the lower floor at their disposal. The facility is used daily by 76 people aged 60–98.

The changes were made possible by the qualification of the Bolesławiec project for the Multiannual “Senior+” Programme for 2015–2020, in a competition organized by the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy. The grant awarded under the Multiannual “Senior+” Programme amounts to PLN 232,000, while the city budget contribution is PLN 58,000.

“The new arrangement of the ground-floor space will lead to the creation of a ‘Senior+’ Day Care Home with an enhanced standard of services. Locating the Home on the ground floor will enable people who are ill and disabled, have mobility problems, and constitute the majority of Bolesławiec’s seniors to use the services of the ‘Senior+’ Day Care Home,” informs Danuta Zamaro, head of the Day Care Home in Bolesławiec.

The “Senior+” Day Care Home at Staroszkolna Street is planned to include a club room equipped with lounge chairs and sofas, a kitchenette, dining room, cloakroom, rest room, nursing room, toilets including facilities for people with disabilities, and a rehabilitation room. The room will be equipped, among other things, with exercise bikes, a treadmill, and upper- and lower-limb trainers.

“We also plan to equip the facility beyond the minimum specified in the programme. This will be possible by creating separate rooms on the first floor for a computer lab and an occupational therapy room with a storage area for teaching materials, which requires the installation of a stairlift for people with disabilities, and by developing part of the garden with an outdoor gym, a gazebo with a floor, garden tables and chairs, and shade awnings,” says D. Zamaro.

The plans include developing a 250-square-metre terrace with access to a large recreational plot. During the summer, this will allow for integration meetings, sports and recreational activities, and integration picnics organized in cooperation with members of the Polish Association of the Blind and the Bolesławiec Amazons Association, which also have their offices in the building at 6 C Staroszkolna Street.

“The creation of the ‘Senior+’ Day Care Home will increase the effectiveness of the measures undertaken by the municipal government and enable them to cover a larger group of seniors, while making it easier for those with mobility problems to use the centre. As people grow older, they become increasingly less physically capable. Therefore, appropriate physical activity and rehabilitation are very important elements of an older person’s daily life. This is why such places are needed in Bolesławiec: they are also intended to meet the need for social contact and help maintain good physical and mental fitness,” says Piotr Roman, Mayor of Bolesławiec.

The “Senior+” Day Care Home will offer classes in art, computer, culinary and sewing workshops, as well as in the gymnasium. The modernization is scheduled to be carried out from March through the end of October 2018.
