The Kamienna Góra District Prosecutor’s Office is supervising an investigation against Santiago D., who is suspected of unintentionally causing the death of the minor Krystian D.
The incident occurred on January 18, 2018, in Kamienna Góra. Nine-month-old Krystian was staying in an apartment under the care of his uncle, Santiago D. During play, the man allegedly tossed the boy into the air. At one point, the child slipped from his hands and fell to the floor, hitting his head. Trying to comfort the crying boy, the man picked him up again. At that point, the suspect explained, the boy allegedly lost consciousness, causing him to fall from the man’s hands again. He hit the floor once more.
The man called an ambulance. The injured boy was taken to the hospital in Kamienna Góra and then transported to a specialist hospital in Legnica. After doctors discovered a brain hematoma, surgery was performed.
Unfortunately, the boy died on the evening of January 19. The doctors caring for the victim after his admission to hospital found no visible external injuries on his body.
Santiago D. was detained. On January 20, he was brought to the Kamienna Góra District Prosecutor’s Office, where he was charged with unintentionally causing the death of a 9-month-old child.
The suspect confessed to the crime and also gave explanations. (The court rejected the prosecutor’s motion for D.’s temporary detention. Investigators have announced that they will appeal the court’s decision).
Santiago D. faces up to five years in prison.
