Bogatynia police officers received information about a fire that had broken out in one of the houses in the city. Seeing the spreading flames and smoke threatening the building’s residents, the officers immediately began rescuing people.
– As the entrance door was locked from the inside and flames were visible inside, the police officers looked for another way to enter the building – says junior aspirant Agnieszka GogułAgnieszka Goguł, spokesperson for the Zgorzelec police. – It turned out that at the back there was a second door leading to a ground-floor apartment, from which two women had already left on their own.
The officers tried to enter the stairwell this way, but the fire and heavy smoke made it impossible. After going outside, the police officers noticed people on the building’s first floor who were looking for a way out. One of the officers climbed onto the roof of an extension and took a five-year-old girl, followed by a six-month-old girl, through the window. Once the children were safe, the officers used a ladder to evacuate the remaining residents.
In addition to the Bogatynia police officers, six fire service units and an emergency medical team took part in the operation. Fortunately, no one suffered any more serious injuries. A 97-year-old resident of the building was taken to hospital for observation due to her age.
