As every year during the pre-Christmas period, shopping fever is in full swing. Increased activity can be seen in public places, particularly in hypermarkets and shopping centres. Our haste, absent-mindedness, lack of caution, the abundance of promotions and tempting shopping offers—all this means that, absorbed in shopping, we forget basic, often very simple safety rules.

Police appeal for vigilance and caution

Let us remember that when going shopping, we should not take all our savings with us, but only the cash we need. We should pay for our purchases with the exact amount. Money should be kept in a safe place, preferably on the inside of a clothing or bag pocket secured with a button or zip. It is important not to leave a wallet containing money in an open bag, in plain sight, for example on a shop counter,

It is also important not to leave coats, bags or packages unattended.

If we shop on auction websites, let us also remember that dishonest people may be found there as well. Scammers lie in wait for their victims, taking advantage of inattention, haste, excitement and the desire to acquire an item as quickly and cheaply as possible.

Let us also remember to be cautious when travelling on crowded local means of transport.

If we travel by our own cars, we should ensure that no valuables are left unattended in visible places. Keys, documents, handbags or backpacks left on seats may prove to be easy pickings for a thief.
