We received a report from a reader concerning a willow cut down by the city pond on Bankowa Street in Bolesławiec. “I wonder why it was done,” the Bolesławiec resident asks. “In my opinion, the tree was healthy.”

We give the floor to Grażyna Strzyżewska, deputy head of the Municipal Housing Management Establishment:

The willow the reader asked about was approved for removal as early as this spring. The justification for the application stated that “visible [są] decay and cavities in the trunk and branches, and fruiting bodies of the tinder fungus” were present.

Since the area on Bankowa Street is entered in the register of historic monuments, the decision to remove the willow was made on November 6 by the Lower Silesian Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments. And it was made precisely because of the tree’s poor health. (It is worth adding that MZGM will plant one willow as part of “environmental compensation.”)
