Our Reader asked us to publicize the matter. In her view, someone who would oversee the city’s greenery would be very useful to our city. Andrzej Laudański, owner of Cukiernia „Nowa”, shares this opinion: “If it were someone who approached their work with passion, then why not?”
Last year, Laudański’s company won the “Bolesławiec in Flowers” competition (in the category of the most beautifully flower-decorated gardens at commercial and service establishments); in this year’s edition, it came second. “We decided to create a summer garden for children,” the owner explains. A sandbox was built beside the confectionery, a swing was installed, and hornbeams were planted. “We wanted to shield ourselves from the busy street with greenery and create a pleasant atmosphere,” says Andrzej Laudański. “The trees are doing their job. Every year they have more and more branches. It will be even prettier here,” he predicts.
During the December session of the City Council, Janina Piestrak-Babijczuk submitted an interpellation concerning a city gardener. “Is it possible to employ— to improve the appearance of our city—someone who would take care of the proper aesthetics of its greenery?” asked the Council chair.
We asked Agnieszka Gergont, spokesperson for the Bolesławiec municipal office, the same question. We sent the questions by email on December 3. The spokesperson replied 12 days later: “For some time, the Bolesławiec Municipal Office has been considering the possibility of creating a city gardener position. However, due to the very demanding investment schedule, the draft budget for next year does not provide for any new positions in the administration, and therefore does not provide for creating a new post for a city gardener in 2009.”
She added: “The implementation of tasks related to maintaining greenery in our city is carried out on the basis of consultations with specialist companies operating in this sector.”
The municipal office plans to renovate the park on Zgorzelecka Street and the city planty, as well as revitalize the Defenders of Hel Park. “Efforts are being made to obtain external funding for the implementation of these projects,” wrote Agnieszka Gergont.
The 2009 draft budget allocated PLN 840,000 for maintaining greenery and PLN 20,000 for ornamental greenery in the market square.
