On 27 July, the duty officer at the Police Station in Bogatynia was informed of a cross-border chase conducted by the German police. Police officers from Bogatynia determined that the Germans had begun pursuing a Volvo in Zittau. While fleeing, the driver crossed the Polish border at Sieniawka, where he continued his escape.

German officers continued the pursuit in Poland. On one of the streets in Sieniawka, their police vehicle blocked the fleeing vehicle's path. The Volvo collided with a police van. The fugitive was injured and taken to hospital. (However, he did not suffer anything more serious).

The driver was a 33-year-old resident of Bogatynia who had violated a court-ordered ban and—according to preliminary tests—was driving under the influence of drugs.

The 33-year-old was arrested under a European Arrest Warrant issued by the German prosecutor's office. He was then taken to the District Court in Jelenia Góra, which remanded the suspect in custody for seven days. During this time, the man will be handed over to German law enforcement authorities.

The detainee had been convicted multiple times—including in Poland—for property-related offences. He is, among other things, suspected of breaking into an apartment in Bogatynia.
