The collision occurred on Wrocławska Street in Legnica. The driver of a Toyota Corolla stopped before the pedestrian crossing to let a pedestrian pass. The driver of an Opel, who was driving behind the Toyota, failed to stop in time and hit its rear, then drove away.

After being informed about the incident, police officers began a pursuit. Despite clear light and sound signals, the Opel driver had no intention of stopping. After several kilometres, officers from the Prevention Department blocked his way.

A police officer got out of the patrol car to arrest the suspect. The fleeing driver then reversed his vehicle and accelerated toward the officer. The officer drew his service weapon and fired a warning shot. He then jumped aside to avoid being hit.

The 44-year-old did not get far: on a bend in the road, he lost control of the vehicle and ended up in a ditch. He then got out of the car and fled into the forest. He was arrested moments later.

It turned out that the resident of Złotoryja County did not have a driving licence. What is more, he was drunk. (The test showed 1.4 per mille of alcohol in his breath).

The 44-year-old now faces up to 10 years in prison.
