Two tragedies occurred in Wrocław on the night from Saturday to Sunday. At around 1:00 a.m., a man fell into the moat near Podwale. Unfortunately, he could not be rescued. After 2:00 a.m., police patrols were still at the scene. The officers then noticed a passing Volkswagen Jetta. When he saw the officers, the driver turned around and began to flee.
The police gave chase. The fleeing driver lost control of the vehicle on Grunwaldzki Bridge. He crashed into a group of people. A 22-year-old passer-by died at the scene. Two people were taken to hospital: an 18-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man. Both suffered serious bodily injuries.
“The perpetrator of the accident jumped out of the car and into the Oder,” said Paweł Petrykowski, spokesperson for the Wrocław police. The man attempted to escape by swimming. He was pulled out of the water by water police officers.
The fugitive first spent several hours in hospital and was then taken into police custody. As the IstotneInformacje.pl portal learned, the perpetrator of the accident will be questioned by the prosecutor’s office today.
The man was not carrying any documents. He also refused to reveal his identity. However, fingerprints established that he was a 21-year-old from near Bolesławiec. What is more, it turned out that the perpetrator had been fleeing in a stolen car and was also subject to a court-ordered driving ban, valid until 2012.
The police are awaiting the results of the blood test. Investigators suspect that the man was intoxicated.
We tried to determine where the driver came from. The police spokesperson told us that he could not provide the name of the town, as this would make it easy to identify the perpetrator of the accident.
