On May 2, the white-and-red flag was raised in Bolesławiec’s Market Square. The ceremony was accompanied by the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment and US Army soldiers. The flag detail included soldiers from the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment, representatives of the Bolesławiec Police and the Municipal Guard. Standard-bearer units were present during the ceremony.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of local governments, veterans’ organizations, unions and non-governmental organizations, scouts, and Bolesławiec residents. The observance of the Flag Day of the Republic of Poland was enhanced by the Bolesławiec Municipal Brass Band. The weather was not as favorable as during the European May Picnic. It began to rain toward the end of the ceremony.
The Flag Day of the Republic of Poland has been observed since 2004. Among other aims, the observance promotes knowledge of Polish identity and national symbols. The colors displayed on the national flag are among the most important elements of national identity. May 2 is also Polish Diaspora and Poles Abroad Day.
