Police officers from Zgorzelec wanted to stop the driver of a van for a roadside inspection. However, he ignored the officers’ signals and began fleeing toward Lubań, repeatedly exceeding the speed limit, breaking numerous regulations, and forcing other road users, among other things, to pull onto the shoulder.

At one point, the 27-year-old, a resident of Lubań, abandoned the vehicle and began fleeing on foot. He was apprehended after a short pursuit.

As it turned out, police officers found 400,000 cigarettes without Polish excise stamps in the detained man’s vehicle. It was estimated that if the goods had reached the market, the State Treasury would have lost more than PLN 300,000.

The Lubań resident faces a heavy fine and forfeiture of the contraband. In addition, the 27-year-old’s driving licence was confiscated for exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/h in a built-up area.
