On February 7, Zgorzelec police officers received two reports of attempted cash extortion by scammers posing as relatives. Officers do not rule out the possibility that there may have been more such attempts. In each case, the criminals’ intended victims were elderly people. The caller claimed to be a family member who had caused a road accident and asked for an urgent loan. The residents of Zgorzelec remained vigilant and were not fooled by the scammers.

Police officers remind the public that scammers use various methods. Sometimes thieves pose not as relatives, but as employees of building administration offices, energy companies or water utilities, as well as police officers or priests. A moment of inattention is enough to deprive someone of their savings.

– Anyone who encounters a similar method used by criminals should immediately contact the nearest police unit at 997 or 112. Let us remember that notifying us quickly will help arrest the scammers and stop their criminal activity. We also remind everyone that police officers NEVER ask anyone to hand over cash – Zgorzelec officers emphasize.

They add: – At the same time, we appeal to children and young people to pass our advice on to older people: parents, grandmothers and grandfathers, who often remain alone at home and are therefore exposed to scammers or door-to-door sellers.
