Football has been the most popular sport for years. Even small towns have their own football teams. The sport also attracts the greatest number of fans. Why, then, do teams from Bolesławiec and the surrounding area have to travel several dozen kilometres each way during the winter break between competitions to play a friendly match?

The answer to this question is simple. Because there is no facility in Bolesławiec or Bolesławiec County where teams could train or play a friendly match in late autumn, winter or early spring. There are “Orlik” pitches, of course, but it is well known that an “Orlik” cannot replace a full-size pitch. That is why footballers from Bolesławiec and the surrounding area travel, for example, to Legnica, Żagań, Żary or Zgorzelec, where they rent artificial-turf pitches—for considerable sums of money.

Why, then, is there no artificial-turf pitch in Bolesławiec?
“It is a matter of priorities. In the near future, the modernisation of the municipal stadium is the most important issue,” explains Zbigniew Kowalczyk, Director of the Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre in Bolesławiec.

Documentation is currently being prepared, on the basis of which the municipal stadium will be modernised. We can already reveal that after the renovation, the stadium will meet both football and athletics requirements, including the possibility of hosting championships of various ranks. It will therefore become a universal stadium. This is probably the best solution for the facility.

As for the idea of building an artificial-turf pitch, it is being considered. If funds can be obtained under the new development plan for the Water and Sports Centre on Spacerowa Street in Bolesławiec, such a facility will be built there. There is probably no better place than the OWS. If the areas on Spacerowa Street were developed for this purpose, they could also become a destination not only for friendly matches but also for football camps. However, building such a facility would cost more than PLN 2 million. We can only hope that our town, known for its effectiveness in obtaining EU funds, will secure the money for this purpose as well.
