The first incident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of Kościuszki and Wyspiańskiego streets in Zgorzelec. According to the preliminary findings of the officers, a 43-year-old German man, for reasons not yet established, struck a 73-year-old cyclist. The woman died from the injuries she sustained.

The second tragedy occurred on the A4 motorway, in the lane heading towards the border with Germany, just before the Zgorzelec exit. At around 8:00 p.m., for an undetermined reason, the driver of a Skoda passenger car travelling in the right lane slowed down, and the driver of a Fiat Ducato travelling behind him, who failed to exercise due caution, collided with the rear of the vehicle. The 66-year-old Skoda driver died at the scene.

“We are entering the pre-Christmas week, which means increased traffic on the roads. The rush associated with feverish preparations for the holidays heightens nervousness and anxiety, which very often later affects drivers and pedestrians on the road, causing a series of incidents,” say police officers from Zgorzelec. “We appeal to all road users to exercise prudence, caution and courtesy on the road. We remind drivers not to get behind the wheel under any circumstances after consuming alcohol, or after taking medication that impairs psychophysical fitness. When driving a vehicle, we are responsible not only for our own safety, but also for the safety of other road users.”
