Police officers from the Economic Crime Division of the District Police Headquarters in Lubin came across the trail of a fraudster. As they established, a Lubin resident contacted a telecommunications company each time. He concluded a contract to purchase a mobile phone by telephone, at a favorable price, because the fraudster “agreed” to a subscription. (During the conversation, he provided false details.) In this way, he obtained phones without paying a penny for them.
This scheme would not have succeeded if the fraudster had not been assisted by two couriers. A courier service provider is obliged to verify the recipient’s personal details. In the fraudster’s case, these details never matched. The couriers... received money from the Lubin resident in exchange for keeping quiet.
By the time the perpetrators were arrested, they had managed to defraud nearly 30 mobile phones in this way. The losses were estimated at approximately PLN 50,000.
All three have already been charged. The 36-year-old Lubin resident will be prosecuted for fraud, for which he may face up to eight years in prison. Two couriers from Legnica, aged 21 and 50, will be held responsible for failing to perform their duties and assisting in the fraud. The latter may face up to five years in prison.
