A dozen or so kilometres north of Bolesławiec, just before Trzebień, there is a small holiday resort. It is managed by the 18th Rocket Regiment from Bolesławiec. The total area of this site is almost 15 hectares, two-thirds of which is occupied by a body of water. The first adaptation works began in the early 1980s. The military struggled with numerous administrative and material problems. As these efforts coincided with the time when the English and Argentinians were fighting, local jokers dubbed the place the “Falklands”. It has remained so to this day. One more clarification: this area was never occupied or administered by the military of the former USSR. The gravel pits operating there since the 1970s were located near the village of Parkoszów, while the surrounding farmers’ cows grazed in the meadows.
The main task of those managing the Saturday-and-Sunday Holiday Centre is to properly ensure recreation for the children of military personnel and employees from the Silesian Military District. As in previous years, three 20-day camp sessions were organised this year for secondary-school students. Camp director Jerzy PŁÓCIENNIK and his deputy, Grzegorz IWANOWSKI, were pleased with the attitude of their charges. The young people enjoyed sunbathing, took part in sports and recreational competitions, went on trips to Karpacz, Walim and Bolesławiec, and participated in a “Defensive Training Day”. They were introduced, among other things, to the construction and operating principles of radio stations and individual chemical-protection equipment. The camp nurses, Diana KACZMAREK and Teresa SERWEJUK, willingly gave talks on first-aid training.
Since the beginning of the 1990s, civilians have been able to use the resort’s facilities after paying the appropriate fee. Accommodation is offered primarily in four-person tents, or, at the so-called “wild” campsite, a place for one’s own tent. Because there are so few brick cabins, they are almost unavailable to civilians during the season. With a little luck, one may stay in them in June and September. There is virtually unlimited access to the supervised bathing area and watercraft, while all-day meals—always tasty and plentiful—are available to a limited extent.
The commander of the 18th Rocket Regiment and the resort’s commandant consider this year’s season a success. Will the next one be equally successful?
