I am outraged by the fate of dogs abandoned in the countryside and left without care there. Their former owners drive the dogs out of the city and throw them out of their cars in random places, as long as it is far from their own homes. In the countryside, abandoned dogs are unwanted, because there is generally no shortage of yard dogs here. Poor and hungry animals wander through the fields, often approaching buildings and snatching poultry. They are brutally driven away and beaten; sometimes they die of hunger, while some become feral and pose a threat, especially after contracting rabies.
A society’s attitude toward animals is a measure of its culture. They are living beings who, just like us, experience pain, hunger and suffering. This needs to be discussed in schools and written about in the press. Harming animals is the first step toward the widespread callousness, insensitivity and aggression in relations between people that are so common among us. I kindly ask you to address this issue in the pages of your publication.
