In connection with the article entitled "12 FEBRUARY – A TABOO DATE", published in the April issue of "Głos Bolesławca", I would like to inform the Editorial Board that I have always held, and continue to hold, the publications of Mr Włodzimierz Kowalski, a renowned military historian and activist in the veterans’ community, in high regard.
During the current term of the local government, however, I have not encountered any initiative concerning the organisation, at the city level, of ceremonial observances of 12 FEBRUARY – the anniversary of Bolesławiec’s return to the Motherland. Such an initiative should be expected above all from veterans’ circles.
I therefore await proposals and suggestions regarding the nature and manner of commemorating this anniversary at the city level.
As for the note originating "From the editorial office", I would like to explain that the articles by Mr "Eko" published in "Słowo Polskie" do not reflect the position of the City Board, but are the personal views of the articles’ author.
As for the matter of the subsidy for "Głos Bolesławca", it is well known to the Editorial Board and to many city residents. In the draft city budget for 1993, the City Board proposed a subsidy for "Głos Bolesławca" in the amount of PLN 100 million.
The City Board’s proposal did not, however, receive the support of a majority of the standing committees of the City Council. The City Council determined that the proposed funds were more needed to maintain the local health clinics.
The issue of the subsidy for "Głos Bolesławca" was discussed at three consecutive sessions of the City Council in 1993. Activists from the Bolesławiec Enthusiasts’ Society, on whose initiative "Głos Bolesławca" is published, participated in two of those sessions.
The city budget for 1994 provides for an amount of PLN 30 million, intended to cover the printing costs of one page of the periodical containing information concerning the operation of the city’s local government. The budgeted amount will be allocated to the Editorial Board of "Głos Bolesławca" at a time and in a manner agreed with the Editor-in-Chief of the periodical.
Yours sincerely
Mayor of the City
