From 25 to 30 November 1993, several people from Primary School No. 4 in Bolesławiec went to Pirna at the invitation of the Mayor, in order to establish friendly contacts with German young people. The best athletes from our school went. Our stay in the city was very successful. We stayed in a youth hostel, quite far from the city centre. Every day we went on excursions. We saw many historic landmarks in the region. Among other things, we learned that Pirna and its surroundings were famous for beautiful sandstone in various shades, from which most of the historic buildings were constructed. We also visited Königstein Fortress, which made a huge impression on everyone with its grandeur and location. From the great terrace, we could admire the beauty of Saxon Switzerland from above. We also walked in the mountains, which look magnificent at this time of year. We also visited Stolpen Fortress, where Countess Cosel was imprisoned. We also visited Dresden. Pirna is only a 20-minute train ride from that city. In Dresden, we visited a museum that housed memorabilia connected with King Augustus the Strong, as well as paintings by many famous artists, including many Polish ones. We spent some time with German young people. The greatest experience was a meeting at the UZ club. The club supports young people considered so-called delinquents—that is, those who once stole, abused alcohol or used drugs, among other things—and who are undergoing rehabilitation. The young people who look after them and come there of their own free will try to help them. They organise interesting activities in hobby groups, such as painting, sculpture, sport and music; they often go on trips to the mountains and set up camps in the open air. They try to live in harmony with nature. We left Pirna with regret. We are looking forward to our German friends’ visit to Bolesławiec.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to the President of the City and the Head of the Department of Education and Social Affairs of the City of Bolesławiec for making our trip possible.
