Death frightens and disorients us; we cannot remove it from our field of vision, nor are we able to comprehend it. We cannot speak of Zosia in the past tense. Someone like Her, someone who filled everyone she encountered with her personality, will not speak to us, smile, or ask: how are you, darling?
One must ask what remains after such a wonderful person? And is it true that only death gives life its beauty? If so, Zosia lives on in those who loved Her, in those who knew and admired Her. All the warm words that She never withheld from anyone remain within us, as do the words of comfort that She never spared when things were difficult. Zosia generously gave of herself. I remember her dedication to the scouting cause; I remember how she cherished the memory of the people with whom she had travelled the battle trail. The way She spoke about those times... Every conversation on that subject was a beautiful lesson in love of the Homeland.
Zosia knew how to love. People, the world, ideas. She was all love and kindness. I never heard her say an unkind word about anyone. There was always understanding, always an attempt to soften wrongs inflicted by others. Zosia knew how to listen; warm-hearted and kind to everyone, she drew people to herself. The fate of the people she had ever encountered was never indifferent to Her. She knew how to value in people what was worthy of appreciation. She expressed it. We drew wisdom and peace from Her, admired Her ability to build realms of love, Her acceptance of the world and optimism. It must also be remembered that Zosia Kłosowska was a lady. A woman of great personal charm, tact and delicacy. And that is how She will remain in our memory.
And to those closest to Her, to the family, I address this thought: it is some consolation in itself that one can share one’s sorrow among many people. And because it is shared among many, only a small part of the sorrow and despair should remain with You. Let us be glad that we were given the chance to meet Zosia Kłosowska—She gave us herself, so let us not squander this gift.
