We often write about road accidents in our articles. At the time information is published, we can rarely provide the causes of the incidents. Therefore, we selected a dozen of the most tragic accidents from last year and asked the Bolesławiec police about them.
“The most common cause of accidents is excessive speed,” says Adriana Szajwaj, spokesperson for the Bolesławiec police. It is responsible for almost half of all road incidents. Another frequent cause is drivers’ reckless bravado—incorrect passing, avoiding obstacles and overtaking. Accidents caused, for example, by a vehicle’s poor technical condition occur less often.
According to police statistics, there were 68 accidents on the roads of Bolesławiec County last year. Twenty-two people died. In the first half of 2007, there were 37 road incidents, in which 9 people died. During the same period in 2008, police recorded 41 accidents (13 fatalities).
The largest number of serious road incidents occurred on Road No. 4. In the first months of 2008, police recorded a temporary decline in the number of accidents, which officials attributed to the increase in the number of speed-camera poles.
How can accidents be avoided? “Let’s drive with imagination and ease off the accelerator,” says Adriana Szajwaj. “If road conditions are difficult, let’s drive more slowly than the regulations indicate; that way, at least, the driver will never be caught off guard,” she adds.
