Early April, but there is no sign of spring. There is still snow and cold. Preparations for the holidays are under way. However, the football season has already begun. On Good Friday, April 5, according to the schedule for the younger and older junior leagues, a BKS – Włókniarz Mirsk match is to be held on the pitch on Rajska Street. There is melting snow on the field. The temperature is close to zero. The lines marking the field of play have to be drawn. This is always done with lime, but it has one drawback—it is white and cannot be seen on snow. Red pitch dressing was found, brought by coach Benesiewicz in his "Maluch". The boys arrive early to help the coach prepare the pitch for the match. The visitors from Mirsk arrive. They have to change in the bus. It is somewhat warmer there than in the leaky barracks serving as a changing room for players and referees, without heating or water.
The first match begins. The melting snow creates puddles. The running players mix the snow with mud and water. A total quagmire. After the match, the boys all look alike; the colors of their shirts are so covered in mud that the numbers on their backs cannot be seen. Half-time. In a moment, the older junior teams enter the field. The referees warm themselves with hot tea brought in a thermos by the coach. The second match takes place in even more mud and larger puddles. The players' appearance is an incredible sight. Muddy from head to toe. Soaked through. At last, the match ends. To change and wash, the boys have to make a journey across half the city, from Rajska to the ZSM hall on Prusa Street. They walk along, prompting pitying smiles from the few passers-by hurrying home with their last holiday purchases. The visitors hurry home. Without washing, packing their muddy equipment into plastic bags. They know that in Mirsk they can count on a hot bath and warm tea at their club. They are "delighted" that they were welcomed in Bolesławiec so "hospitably." Some of them will surely fall ill after this visit. Such are the realities of sport in Bolesławiec.
I will add that after such a match, washing the sports kits falls to the parents. I am "lucky" enough to have such a footballer at home. The kit weighed 2.5 kg, and it was only after rinsing the football socks four times that their color and light stripes became visible. What more can be said.
