Eight children are showing symptoms of a staphylococcal infection. They were all born in Bolesławiec at the beginning of May. The parents claim that the infections occurred in the hospital. Employees of the Bolesławiec ZOZ are testing themselves and all the equipment to determine whether the bacterium is in fact being transmitted to newborns during their stay in the maternity ward.
“We are taking swabs from employees, bedding and hospital equipment. There is currently no evidence that the infection originated in our ward,” Nikolai Lambrinow, the district hospital’s medical director, told IstotneInformacje.pl. “If it turned out that the situation required the ward to be closed, we would do so immediately. However, that is still a long way off,” the director added.
So far, bacterial cultures have confirmed staphylococcus in four children. The others are awaiting their results, and their parents are worried. “All our children were in the maternity ward between 3 and 6 May,” said one of the mothers who agreed to speak to us. “We suspect that the infections occurred in the hospital, in that very ward,” added another. However, both women wish to remain anonymous.
The staphylococcus that infected the children can easily be treated with basic antibiotics. Despite what happened, the parents praise the pediatric ward where the babies are now staying. They say the care there is exemplary and that their children are recovering.
