A press conference at which media representatives were informed about the hospital’s success was held on 16 November. Obtaining the Certificate for the Management System according to EN ISO 90001:2000 took exceptionally little time in the case of the Voivodeship Hospital for the Nervously and Mentally Ill in Bolesławiec—less than a year.
Implementing the system cost less than PLN 90,000. However, these costs are expected to pay for themselves in the coming years. This is good news not only for the hospital authorities, but also for patients and their families. The certificate may guarantee to them that the hospital provides services at a very high level. Jacek Forszpaniak, a representative of the certifying company, has no doubt about this—he admitted that the auditor had found nothing to criticize.
The year of implementing the system was a year of hard work. “The staff rose to the occasion,” says Janusz Kalisz, the hospital director. “This is not merely a medal for the director or the representative. The certificate is recognition for every employee,” the director adds, announcing that the most deserving employees may expect bonuses.
The certificate was granted for three years. Nevertheless, the hospital cannot rest on its laurels—it will be assessed once a year so that the certifying company can be certain that the facility maintains the standards.

“A very interesting phenomenon is that the employees did not even notice that they had changed their work standards. They think they work as they used to, but in reality they have adapted to what the ISO system requires,” explains Andrzej Żurek, representative for media affairs, discussing the details of implementing the system. – “It was achieved imperceptibly.”
The hospital authorities do not conceal that they hope their efforts will be recognized by the Lower Silesian Branch of the National Health Fund. A new chapter is opening in the facility’s history. Further development opportunities are being considered. The most optimistic scenario envisages investments worth several million zlotys and a 65-percent increase in the number of hospital beds. If this succeeds, in a few years the Voivodeship Hospital for the Nervously and Mentally Ill in Bolesławiec may become the leader in psychiatry in Lower Silesia.
