The opening of the exhibition by Jarosław Derwisz, a graduate of Wrocław’s State Higher School of Fine Arts (now the Academy of Fine Arts), took place on October 19 in the Museum of Ceramics building on Kutuzowa Street. The exhibition can be visited until the end of November. The works on display were created using oil-painting techniques.
Two themes dominate the painter’s work: the nude and the landscape, especially the urban landscape. But this is not traditional painting. On the contrary, it is contemporary art—at times fierce, wild and unsettling. Yet there is no shortage of warmer, more cheerful colors.
“I am fascinated by Fauvism. But my paintings also draw on Cubism, and even geometric art,” Jarosław Derwisz told the Boleslawiec.org portal. “At the exhibition, I showed the paintings I really wanted to show—the ones I value most.” The word “Cubism” appears in the context of Derwisz’s work for a reason. The artist names Pablo Picasso as one of his masters.
The artist also admitted that he is fascinated by collage. Perhaps this is the direction in which his work will evolve. The painter also wants to take up industrial design. Painting—highly emotional and personal—is nevertheless the most important thing to him. “Most of the works I create are works I also make for myself. Not necessarily to show off to someone,” Jarosław Derwisz emphasized.
Jarosław Derwisz works in painting, applied graphics (the artist’s main source of income) and mosaic. He has presented his works many times—both in solo and group exhibitions—in Lubań, Zgorzelec, Wołów and Wrocław.
