When we published an article about the pergola, our Readers asked us to intervene regarding the deteriorating fountain near Priest Popiełuszko Square. As HEX6 and Życzliwy pointed out, the renovated and illuminated fountain in the city centre would certainly look beautiful at night. It would surely add charm to the rather neglected square. Unfortunately, as we learned unofficially, the City Office does not intend to have it repaired. “We can no longer bear any costs,” an official who wished to remain anonymous told Boleslawiec.org. Repairing the fountain would cost a fortune, while the site is to be sold soon anyway.

The steamroller came and... levelled it

In the aforementioned article about the pergola in Bolesławiec, we wrote about broken boards, piles of rubbish, plastic bottles and blankets scattered around the place where concerts by the biggest Polish pop stars are to be held. A place to which many tourists and people from outside Bolesławiec will come for the Ceramics Festival. A representative location, after all. We also mentioned the lack of response from the city authorities to an article published on another local website.

After Boleslawiec.org published the story, we did receive a response. Just not the one we had hoped for. The pergola was dangerous, so... it was cut down and levelled to the ground.

To paraphrase the lyrics of a well-known song by Wojciech Młynarski, the steamroller came and levelled it. As Boleslawiec.org learned, since the site is intended for sale anyway, we should not expect a new structure to replace the former pergola. Everything will be at the discretion of the future owner of the square. It seems, however, that a potential buyer will care about something other than the city residents’ sentiments.
