They are called Kold. The band, as its members admit, was formed spontaneously, out of a passion for music. Despite nightmarish problems renting a room, they have been rehearsing regularly for two years. They currently rent a room at Bolesławiec’s Boniteks, which they prepared themselves. At first, the band was essentially a family venture – it was made up of three cousins and their friend Bartek Popek. After three months, it became even more of a family affair: Justyna Rutkowska joined, the vocalist and, privately, the wife of drummer Krzysztof Talar. Six months ago, one of the cousins was replaced by Paweł Mendrek, Kold’s current bassist.
They mainly play for themselves. Music is something that allows them to escape from gray reality, something that gives them real power. As Justyna Rutkowka admitted, everyone in the band comes from a slightly different musical background, but that is precisely the band’s strength. The members understand one another perfectly and complement each other musically. Kold tries not to model itself on any particular group (although they have excellent influences: Dream Theater, Riverside, Faith No More, Alter Bridge, King Crimson and Coma); they intend to create something of their own. The best songs emerge spontaneously during rehearsals. Usually, however, the first sounds are brought by guitarist Tomek Górecki. The lyrics, written by the vocalist, are also composed under the influence of the moment and emotions. Sometimes, thanks to the music, a lyric takes on an entirely new dimension.
The band wants to record five of its songs soon. The first demo, distributed mainly at the group’s only concert in Bolesławiec, was very well received by rock-music fans. Kold is also preparing for more concerts. As they admit, they are not an amateur band. They want to play once, but play well. “To those who liked it, we want to give something better; to those who didn’t, we want to show that we can do it,” says Tomek Górecki. Unfortunately, as they themselves note, Bolesławiec lacks venues where concerts could be held. There is also no place where various musicians could hold professional rehearsals. Neither the Młodzieżowy Dom Kultury nor the Bolesławiecki Ośrodek Kultury currently has a decent room with suitable equipment.
