In Bolesławiec, Seniors’ Day is celebrated in several ways. “Back in June, during Bolesławiec Days, we celebrated the city’s Seniors’ Day,” Mayor Piotr Roman recalled, highlighting seniors’ activities. At that time, seniors marched through the city streets in a colorful parade styled after the 1930s and presented a rich artistic program. Piotr Roman also drew attention to the extraordinary commitment and initiatives of the Bolesławiec Senior Council.
The International Day of Older Persons celebrations at the DDP were also an excellent opportunity to present artistic and literary work and to discuss topics that concern or interest Bolesławiec’s oldest residents, the people cared for by the Day Care Home. Mrs. Janina Matusiewicz also celebrated her birthday. The distinguished jubilarian turned 98.
“Celebrations of seniors’ holidays are always an opportunity to draw attention to the problems faced by older people,” emphasizes Danuta Zamaro, head of the Day Care Home, a support center for older and lonely people who require assistance. It is worth recalling that at the Day Care Home, seniors can continue their intellectual development, maintain physical fitness and engage in various interpersonal relationships. Activities include, among other things, special events, programs promoting a healthy lifestyle, presentations and lectures, and domestic and foreign tourist trips. The home is a place for seniors to meet every day—to talk and exchange ideas—as well as a center for spending free time and taking part in various activities.
“The idea of building a residential care home for elderly people arose at the initiative of the residents of the Day Care Home. Until 2012, Bolesławiec had no facility where seniors could receive round-the-clock care,” Mayor Piotr Roman recalls. The residents of the home are people who require 24-hour care because of age, illness or disability. DPS staff provide residents with assistance in everyday activities and organize activities. “Trips around Lower Silesia and short excursions outside the city are very popular,” informs DPS director Bogusław Szeffs.
Every year, the home’s residents and staff celebrate their seniors’ holiday with particular solemnity. October is the month when social awareness of older people’s needs and the importance of ensuring them a dignified life are especially emphasized: October 1 is the International Day of Older Persons, and October 20 is European Senior Citizens’ Day.
