- 1 August: “Under the Sun”, directed by Vitaly Mansky. This is a subversive portrait of one of the most distinctive and ruthless regimes of our time: North Korea. Vitaly Mansky travels to Korea on the authorities’ commission to make a film that is a patriotic paean. However, the director never turns off the red recording button, risking his life to film not only the spectacle created by the regime, but also to document the terrifying reality behind the scenes in North Korea.

8 August: “Sparrows”, the latest film by Rúnar Rúnarsson, acclaimed by audiences and critics around the world. It won the main prize at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and an award in the 1-2 Competition at the Warsaw Film Festival. It is a story of the journey from childhood to adulthood, of the relationship between father and son, and of love, set against the breathtaking Westfjords.

22 August: “Things to Come”, winner of the Silver Bear for Best Director at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival. Nathalie teaches philosophy at a secondary school in Paris. She is passionate about her work, and takes particular pleasure in passing on her love of thinking to her students. As a married woman with two children, she divides her time between her family, former students and her possessive mother. One day, her husband tells her that he is leaving her for another woman. Facing this freedom imposed on her, Nathalie must put her life back together. The film revolves around questions of happiness and vocation, and whether an established way of life is a value or foolishness. It presents not only the search for new paths in the heroine’s life, but also reflections on whether and to what extent philosophy is useful in everyday life.

29 August: “Sweet Bean”, directed by Naomi Kawase. The opening film of the Un Certain Regard section at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival, and also the winner of awards at numerous international festivals. A beautiful story of an unusual friendship between a pastry chef and an elderly woman, set against blooming cherry blossoms. Sentaro (Masatoshi Nagase) runs a small bakery where he serves dorayaki—a Japanese dessert consisting of pancakes filled with sweet red bean paste (“an”). Sentaro is looking for someone to help in the kitchen, but when an elderly woman, Tokue (Kirin Kiki), applies, he reluctantly hires her. Tokue quickly proves that her hands can work wonders when it comes to preparing “an”. Thanks to her secret recipe, the small business soon flourishes... Over time, Sentaro and Tokue open their hearts to each other and reveal old wounds.
