Every year during the holiday season, police officers draw attention to the problem of abandoning animals, most often dogs and cats. This usually happens because of an ill-considered decision to get an animal, a lack of knowledge about how to care for it and the responsibilities involved.
Unfortunately, animals are often bought as gifts for someone. When the animal starts causing problems, the recipient most often gets rid of it. During the holiday season, household pets become a real nuisance when it turns out that we cannot take our dog or cat on holiday. Very often, an owner who cannot—or does not even try to—find someone to care for the pet takes the animal that has been part of the household and abandons it.
The police remind us that abandoning an animal by its owner or by another person responsible for its care is legally considered animal abuse.
If we see that someone has abandoned an animal, left and left it without care, that an animal has been tied to a tree, is wandering around or looks lost, or in any other situation in which an animal is being harmed, we should notify the police, municipal police or other services.
