Sisters and Brothers in Christ the Lord!

As Bishop of Legnica, I hereby announce news of an event that occurred in the parish of St. Hyacinth in Legnica and bears the hallmarks of a Eucharistic miracle. On the Host which, on 25 December 2013, fell onto the floor while Holy Communion was being distributed, and which was picked up and placed in a vessel of water, red discolorations appeared after some time. The then Bishop of Legnica, Bishop Stefan Cichy, appointed a Commission tasked with observing the phenomenon. In February 2014, a fragment of the red-colored material was separated and placed on a corporal. In order to determine the nature of this material, the Commission commissioned the collection of samples and appropriate examinations by various competent institutions.

Ultimately, the report of the Department of Forensic Medicine states: “The histopathological examination revealed tissue fragments containing fragmented portions of striated muscle. (…) The overall image (…) most closely resembles cardiac muscle” (…) with changes that “often accompany agony.” Genetic tests indicate that the tissue is of human origin.

In January of this year, I presented the entire matter to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Today, in accordance with the recommendations of the Holy See, I instruct Reverend Parish Priest Andrzej Ziombra to prepare a suitable place for displaying the Relic so that the faithful may venerate it. I also ask that appropriate information be made available to visitors and that systematic catechesis be conducted to help properly shape the faithful’s awareness regarding Eucharistic worship. I further recommend establishing a book in which any graces received and other events of a supernatural nature would be recorded.

I hope that all this will serve to deepen devotion to the Eucharist and will bear fruit by influencing the lives of those who approach this Relic. We interpret this extraordinary Sign as a special expression of the kindness and love of God, who stoops so deeply toward humanity.

I commend myself to your prayers and bless you
