“Based on extensive historical knowledge, insightful analyses, impartial assessments and support for European ideals, the voice of Timothy Garton Ash is one of the most important intellectual voices in Europe and about Europe. His view of European values, their development and the people who embody them has helped establish and define the ideals that make Europe a single whole. Timothy Garton Ash has contributed significantly to this perspective on the »new normalization of European ideals« for a united continent. This makes him a great bridge-builder in Europe after the peaceful revolution” – reads the justification issued by the prize committee and presented on Friday, 26 February, by Prof. Willy Xylander, chair of the committee of the International Bridge Prize of the Europa-Miasto Zgorzelec/Görlitz.
The ceremonial presentation of the Bridge Prize will take place on 28 October 2016 at the Gerhart Hauptmann Theatre in Görlitz. The laudation for T.G. Ash will be delivered by Wolfgang Schäuble, Federal Minister of Finance.
