We reported at the end of December last year that there would be a plaque commemorating the victims of the Smolensk air disaster. The subject returned during the January meeting of the City Council. Forum councillor and initiator of the plaque’s construction Eugeniusz Jabłoński spoke, informing the councillors that the Bolesławiec Municipal Government had already received permission from the provincial heritage conservator and also providing the account number to which money could be paid for this purpose.

The councillor also read out an open letter from the civic committee concerning the construction of a memorial plaque for the victims of the Smolensk air disaster. The document says, among other things:

Creating the plaque is our patriotic duty and a tribute to those who died under unexplained circumstances [...]

It is our duty to preserve the memory of those who did not return to their Homeland, those who died far from it while carrying out their state duties.

May this plaque, funded by the residents of Bolesławiec, remind future generations of this great Polish national tragedy and of people who rendered such outstanding service to the Republic of Poland

We therefore seek historical truth about the causes of the disaster, truth freed from lies and omissions [podkreślenie – „ii”].

E. Jabłoński stressed that 36 people had signed the letter, and that the initiative was supported by Bolesławiec’s honorary citizens: Janina Bany-Kozłowska, Rev. Edward Bober, Jan Filipek, Zbigniew Razik and Ryszard Tomczyk.

The councillor also asked for support for the construction of the plaque. He added that he had already donated half of his councillor’s allowance for this purpose.

The plaque is expected to cost PLN 30,000–40,000. We will return to the subject.
