On 17 January, the duty officer at the Police Station in Bogatynia received a report of a wallet being stolen, along with money, payment cards and documents. In addition, the victim stated that the perpetrator had used the stolen cards found in the wallet to make purchases at one of the shops in Bogatynia.

The police officers from Bogatynia identified a suspect in the theft. He turned out to be a 26-year-old resident of Bogatynia.

The man was detained on 19 January on one of Bogatynia’s streets. He explained that when he learned the police were interested in him, he returned the wallet—but he did not do so out of the goodness of his heart. He took another 50 zlotys from the victim for... finding the wallet.

The police are now clarifying all the circumstances of the case in detail. Among other things, they are checking whether the detainee has committed similar offences in the past.

The 26-year-old faces up to five years in prison.
